Every year, we publish Microsoft’s End of Support list because using up-to-date programming is key for HIPAA compliance. Microsoft will terminate support for earlier versions of a long list of its products beginning January 8, 2019. This means Microsoft will no longer release security updates, non-security updates, or online technical content for any of the programs on this list. Additionally, all free or paid assisted support options will end.
So, what does this mean for users who need to stay HIPAA compliant?
Under the HIPAA Security Rule 45 C.F.R. § 164.308 (a)(5)(ii)(B), organizations must implement procedures for detecting, guarding against, and reporting malicious software. If you’re using software that Microsoft no longer supports, you will not meet the requirements for HIPAA compliance. A comprehensive HIPAA Security Plan involves regularly checking and performing updates on your software. In order for security scans to work, software must be up-to-date. As a result, using out of date software compromises cybersecurity. Please scroll through the list.
